CYCLING TOUR

Start: Nottingham
Finish: Nottingham

Distance: 40/45 per day
Surface: hard surface, cycle paths, moderate motor traffic in some parts, lots of repurposed railway tracks
Highlights: Hidden gems of the East Midlands
Zig Zag has put together an unforgettable circular cycling tour through the heart of the East Midlands, with every turn of the pedal bringing new discoveries. This carefully crafted route takes in a captivating mix of iconic landmarks and hidden gems. We’ll traverse the breathtaking landscapes of the Peak District, uncover the rich industrial heritage along the Derbyshire–Nottinghamshire border, and explore the characterful historic towns of Ashbourne, Chesterfield, Lincoln, and Newark. Whether you're drawn by sweeping countryside views, charming old streets, or fascinating local history, this tour offers a unique and enriching way to experience the Midlands on two wheels.
Itenery.
Day 1
Nottingham - Long Eaton - Derby - Ashbourne (40miles)
After taking in the art-nouveau delights of Long Eaton (who knew!) there will be a tour of Derby city centre led by the Derby Civic Society (how to save Derby High Street!?), staying in the quaint Peak District village of Ashbourne
Day 2
Ashbourne - Bakewell - Chatsworth - Chesterfield (37miles)
This will be an epic hilly ride, not for the faint hearted (unless you have an e-bike, then its a breeze!), taking in the best of the Peak District countryside, pausing to take in the West-front of Chatsworth House. We will finish with an evening stroll around Chesterfield, taking in the Market Place with 12th century origins.
Day 3
Chesterfield - Bolsover - Tuxford - Lincoln (45miles)
Day 3 is a long but relatively flat and easy ride, through the historic Dukeries, Sherwood Forest, stopping at Tuxford, once a fine coaching town left behind by the railways, finishing in Lincoln, which needs no introduction and is a fine setting for an evening city stroll.
Day 4
Lincoln - Newark upon Trent - Car Colston - Nottingham (40miles)
The final day will take in Newark upon Trent, with a guided walking tour of this fine medieval town, led by a local historian, then taking in Car Colston with its unfathomably large village green (the biggest in England? Why??), finishing back in Nottingham by tea time.
Accommodation will be Hotels and or B&Bs.
